Construction & demolition

Construction and demolition is where the practice has spent most of its seventeen years. Work has included acting as the principal contractor's representative for all health and safety matters across multiple concurrent projects, developing project-specific plans and RAMS suites, and running inspection regimes that produce evidence rather than paperwork.

Demolition in particular brings together structural risk, asbestos, dust, noise and public interface in a single programme. It rewards planning and punishes assumption, and it is the environment in which a competent adviser earns their fee most visibly.

Infrastructure & critical assets

Critical infrastructure changes the calculation. The works are often small relative to the asset, but the consequence of an error is measured in service interruption as well as injury. Permit-to-work regimes are strict, access is controlled, and every party on site answers to an operational team as well as a construction one.

The practice has maintained ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems across a UK estate of this kind, supporting both notifiable and non-notifiable CDM projects and working with cross-functional installation teams to balance business need against the standard.

Industry, logistics & fulfilment

In logistics and fulfilment the principal risk is rarely the construction activity in isolation — it is the interface between that activity and an operation that has not stopped. Mechanical handling equipment, conveyor installation and commissioning, and pedestrian segregation all have to be managed against a live building.

This work calls for clear demarcation, disciplined permit systems and inductions that address the operational environment as well as the works. It also calls for an adviser who is comfortable on site during commissioning and testing, not only during construction.

Environment & remediation

Remediation projects put occupational health risk and environmental risk in the same trench. Contaminated ground, dust, water management and material classification have to be handled together, and the monitoring regime has to satisfy the regulator as well as the client.

The practice has worked on environmental and superfund projects and maintains ISO 14001 systems, which means environmental controls are written into the method statement at the outset rather than added after an incident.

Public sector & local authority

Public-sector work is documentation-led. Pre-qualification questionnaires, framework applications and periodic reporting all demand evidence in a specific form, and a gap in the paperwork can cost a bid regardless of how well the work is being done.

Private sector & specialist trades

Specialist trade contractors are frequently held to the principal contractor's standard without having the in-house resource to meet it. RAMS are rejected, inductions are failed, and work is delayed for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the trade.

The practice has provided retained competent-person cover to joinery, stone, ceramics and fixing contractors, handling the audit, documentation, training-matrix and monthly reporting burden so that the trade can concentrate on the work.
